Considering the immense success of the God of War series, it’s hard to believe that there haven’t been a thousand copy-cats trying to cash in on the surprisingly unsaturated genre. With the exception of a few terrible movie to game tie-ins *cough*Ghost Rider*cough*, the Greek Mythology genre is still untapped with many stories waiting to be made into more modern entertainment mediums. Apparently,
some of the folks at Codemasters saw this possibility and got behind Liquid Entertainment’s latest project. Sadly, Rise of the Argonauts is the definition of a copy-cat. It never seems to establish itself as an individual IP, because it takes some many things from other franchises. The experience is still very much one that can be enjoyed, but it isn’t innovative.
In Rise of the Argonauts, you are placed into the shoes of Jason on his quest for the Golden Fleece. I won’t waste your time explaining all the details, but Liquid has definitely changed a few things to make the story into their own; although, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In all actuality, it’s probably a very good thing. Otherwise, where else could I have teamed up with the likes of Achilles, Hercules, Medea, Argos, and so many more? I was surprised, however, that even though I interacted with so many different people I only traveled to maybe 4-5 different locations. You travel to half of these places multiple times throughout the story, so the game does gain some longevity even with only a few primary locations, but it definitely would have been nice to travel to more locations.
