AirPlay’s Super Yum Yum 3 is a really cool logic-based puzzle game where
you guide a hungry lizard through multiple levels and use your tongue to chomp down some food and move from place to place.
I haven’t played the first two so I was pleasantly surprised by just how cool the game is. There are various ways to finish each level, however there is only one way to completely finish each level and get all the fruit or the little lizards that are running about. It’s all about finding the path that will take you through to the end with all the pieces. Lots of logical thought processing going on.
The graphics are sort of bubble pop Japanese style but fit the game quite well. The sounds are a little over the top and while fitting the graphics and the game got a little annoying from time to time
(specifically the voice of your lizard which was like a smurf on helium). But that’s easily remedied with a quick flip of the iPhones silence switch because really, you don’t need them to play the game. Meanwhile, the music for the game is traditional Japanese and is extremely well done and goes a long way toward giving the game some great sound.
Super Yum Yum 3 utilizes the touch screen to move your lizard around and direct his extensible tongue with which he achieves the goal of chowing down on the fruit and collecting his kids.
As you go the levels become increasingly more complex and I was rather pleased by the challenge it posed as it progressed. The puzzles were interesting and compelled me to continue to move forward. I’m not trying to say that there’s a story because there’s nothing at all in that regard. However, underneath all the cartoon-like, shiny, complementary presentation there is a quality puzzle game here that makes me want to go and check in on the previous titles in the series.
I know this review is short but when a company does a good job on many levels there isn’t a need for a lot of words. Super Yum Yum 3, in its simplicity of gameplay and great graphics, is a title that shows how good games can be on the iPhone. In a time when there are a lot of bad games on the platform we need more games like this.
Airplay estimates the gameplay time at 8-10 hours and that sounds about right depending on if you want to just breeze through the game or finish all the levels perfectly.
Overall: 9 Sometimes the sound is annoying but overall the gameplay, interface and presentation are all high quality and it is a game that shows how good games on the iPhone can be.
