This new episode has all the Sam & Max illogical flavour, same crazy dialog and fun from the previous games. Be advised, however, that some of the jokes are for older players, as they make references to things younger players might not get. But obviously, even if you can’t understand these jokes, the rest of the bizarre fun in the game will make you LOL: the hilarious conversations we can have with giant stone statues, the 12 monkey chilli, having a man tied up in your closet or the responses Max gives to everything can make anybody laugh, and at any age.
It’s good to see the errands in this game, something that seems inherent to adventure games, has been dropped, and we have all the puzzles close by - not having to cross the world to go give ITEM A to the CHARACTER X in the farthest corner of the game world. Instead we have complex puzzles that require logical thinking (well, Sam & Max’s special brand of logic). Also they’re pretty well planned and interlaced between them; you finish one puzzle and leap to the next without transition, making the game feel like a well planned scheme, rather than random checkpoints with puzzles dotted about them.
I doubt I have to talk about how an adventure game works, but Sam & Max is no different - point and click, all mouse controlled except during the driving min-igame where you can use your keyboard. Talk to people, investigate things, pick things up, use things... the usual ;-)
Graphically the game is pretty good, if we take the premise that we’re watching a cartoon, and the details of the background with plenty of items you can check and laugh at the responses, is really high. Beautifully vivid colours and smooth animation are seen throughout.
One of the big laughing points are the dialogs, and at Telltale they clearly know the importance of hiring capable voice actors who can bring the characters to life. The big heads are amazing, especially the semi sunken one that talks in whispers is pretty funny. The music, as always, goes along with the game giving a happy atmosphere and some credibility to the bizarre Sam & Max world
This chapter is shorter than previous one, however, and you can have it finished in a couple of hours. Those couple of hours will be filled with plenty of joy and fun, however, and there’s no filler in the game - ensuring a continuous rush of laughs.
Also, the puzzles are harder than in previous instalments, and you’d be well served to have to think of this game as what it is: not a full game, but an episode of a full game.
