Origin PC’s 3 founders all worked at Alienware in Senior level executive positions across a variety of areas. Over time, after the Dell
purchase of Alienware, the company changed. The product and the culture also changed and there was a desire to go back to the roots of high performance gaming PCs with personal support. Origin PC is now doing just that, going back to the roots of highly customizable machines for gamers and will offer both a notebook and desktop (Eon and Genesis) which will be completely customizable.
By completely customizable they mean fully. They offer several cases but that doesn’t mean you can’t ship them a different case and have them build your PC into it. The cases they have on offer are from Silverstone, corsair, and Lian-li. Topping off the outer customization is custom airpbrushing which will utilize default designs or let you slap your own art on it to make it truly your own.
Origin PC also offers an Overclocking guarantee on their Intel i7 machines. They guarantee to get the speed on the website but might be higher with complete stability. On top of that they have dedicated service and a lifetime service guarantee. A dedicated team will be assigned to each order and every machine. That means that you can always talk to the people who helped customize, ship, build, etc. All units come with lifetime phone, email and labor. So later when the box needs upgrading or technical support they will do the remote support and then, if chosen to do labor, it’s totally free. That’s impressive!
Of course these computers aren’t just for gamers, but also for those niche users who truly want to have their completely custom built and branded PC. Origin believes that there is still a lot of growth in the market and a lot of people who need and want these.
While Alienware is no longer manufactured in the US support the product is completely differentand is more of a customizable mass-produced unit, Origin plans to offer complete customization and US-based support. Where Alienware is like a Corvette made in Japan, Origin aims to be the Mustang made in America, from American steel by American hands, figuratively speaking.
On the inside consumers will have a choice of Intel Core i5 & i7 and AMD Phenom II processors. In the notebook area they will offer an 18.4" dual GPU with up to 3 hard drives and Intel true HD.
The configurator will offer a baseline but that is merely a suggested starting point and everything is able to be changed. None of that - Here’s Model X with 3 variations and minimal options. It’s "here’s a case and some tech, build out your dream machine (within your
budget)."
In regards to the configurator there’s a floating box that goes with you throughout and gives you all the specs of the computer and expected delivery date etc. Additionally, you can call someone at Origin that will help you through the setup. The custom options give you the total flexibility to build the computer you want, within your budget and to suit your specific gaming or usage type. Origin will help you decide whether to put that money into cooler art, more processor of bigger, stronger graphics cards all you need to do is tell them what you want to do with the unit.
Origin PC is also offering custom options for DJs and other public personalities where you can put your name or logo on the case. Not only gaming but anyone who wants a high-powered, customized machine from web design to photo and video editing. ALso those users who want a unique computer or a unique look.
They’re starting in North America and then will launch in Australia, Japan and South Africa. Europe will be sometime next year we’re told. The computers are already gaining some acceptance as Fatality is using the gear.
An Origin PC will cost you no less than $2000 with the internals being a good 75% and the external paint job running you from $225 up to over $500. That’s not even including a monitor or any fancy peripherals.
Here’s the most basic of options which of course if were to buy, would totally defeat the purpose of buying from Origin PC. This at least gives you an idea of what they suggest as a minimum.
Will they stand up to the already entrenched Alienware? Probably. Many agree that Alienware has lost its way, lost touch with the gamers it tries to cater to. Sure there is a place in the market for semi-customizable computers, the same with cars. You can buy the standard model, or you can get exactly what you want. For those that want the latter, Origin PC is the place for you.
