Star Wars Trench Run Review (iPhone)

Posted by ,

Yes it’s called Star Wars Trench Run and yes you do make a run at the original Death Star via the trench but really this game shines in its dog fights X-wing vs. TIE Fighter.

The controls include using the accelerometer for flight and the touch screen for firing and using your Jedi power to slow time. That might sound strange at first but really, in order to get those TIE in your crosshair, you’ll need it because they’re fast and they have kamikaze tendencies.

The controls are actually fairly well designed and the sensitivity can be fine-tuned and the pitch inverted. The game is seriously intensive on the iPhone and locked up, crashed and generally made things unbearable from time to time. Aside from that it’s a pretty good game experience. The controls also seem to require you to move the phone a lot and so I wouldn’t suggest playing this game in public as you might strike the person next to you accidentally. Aside from that you can pretty much keep your fingers out of the way thanks to the well designed interface and simple controls.

The game offers two modes, mission and arcade and four difficulty levels which give you a choice between the trench run levels and the dog fight levels. Eventually Vader shows up but you can’t focus on him without getting yourself shot to hell.

The graphics and gameplay reminded me of the old X-Wing vs TIE Fighter but with less variation in the levels and missions. Plus you can only fly the X-wing in this title.

The game opens with the actual footage from A New Hope’s Death Star attack sequence and then goes into the game itself. The sounds and graphics are certainly Star Wars and everything is presented in a very cohesive package.

Overall it’s a fast, fun game where you get to fly an X-Wing up against the Death Star and TIE Fighters and in almost any form, that’s a good thing. The missions include dog fight, cannons, obstacles, Vader and the Exhaust port, but really they’re pretty much the same since four are all in the trench. Arcade mode gives you two options Trench and Dog Fight. But really, it’s sort of missing something, the Force is not so strong with this one as you might think at first.

Our Rating for Star Wars Trench Run Review (iPhone)
8.0
Overall
Gets boring after a while as the levels are just fly and shoot, but it’s certainly Star wars and that means sort of cool
