
Attention passangers of the Oceanic 815, we’re facing some turbulence and instead of paying atention to the plane, we will play some games. Hello Lost fans. Yeah, if you’re not a Lost fan, you’re lost already, this game is not for you.
Lost: Via Domus, or "way home" from latin, is a parallel adventure in the universe of the Lost series, where a group of survivors get stuck on an island full of mysteries and the more they try to get out, more they seem stuck. To fans, we’re talking about a nice meal, while regular players will still be hungry after playing this.
You control Elliot, that at first doesn’t even know his name, yes, amnesia, a little too convenient but it works well, since the series can keep its style of flashbacks where both you as a character and as a player discover your past at the same time. The narrative is strong, like in the series, everything looks like an episode, giving a nice atmosphere, there’s even the "previously on Lost", with a work of edition that’s identical to the original.
The flashbacks are interactive and really clever, if they could use then better, it would add some welcome content to the game. Before each flashback starts you have some pieces of a photo that you should take, the flashback keeps looping until you get it and taking this photo and remembering your own memories become some interesting elements.
The parts that you actually play, like in the jungle, are more like stages and really restrictive in the end. You can’t go around with a map trying to get into places, there are boundaries that allow you to "jump" to the area you want to. There’s not much trouble until here, but even during exploration the game restrict you a lot, always holding you from go far from the pre-estabilished path.
There are also some caves and dark places to explore, forcing you to collect objects around so that you can bargain in exchange of torches. This wouldn’t be a problem if staying in the dark for too long didn’t kill you character misteriously.
Something that’s not so interesting are the puzzles, while I just used the plural, it’s actually just the same puzzle repeating over and over, a fuse box with three different types of fuse which you try to get as much voltage as needed to the right places. At first you might even find it fun, but repetition is exagerated. There’s usually no time limit, except when you’re at the Hatch and has to type the numbers every 108 minutes, in-game time.
The forest is really well represented, some nicely done vegetation, shadows, all the places from the series are really detailed, specially the Dharma Initiative stations, aka "the hatch". The characters leave a lot to be desired tough, some do look alike, but there are some atrocities in there too, that’s a really negative point, since interacting with these characters is one of the main atractives for fans.
Another point where the game leaves a lot to be desired are the voice overs. Any fan would expect that the actors would dub themselves in the game, instead, we just get sound alikes that try to match their voices. The good news are that the sound effects are perfectly transported from the series, the really climatic music and the scary sound effects from the black smoke monster, are all there.
Lost: Via Domus is an interestin work, but it doesn’t look that much like a game, but with an interactive side story that could been shown as a book or comic. The game cover events from the first and second seasons, with some very large jumps, while the story make you interact with events and consequences that would only appear at the third season.
The game is pretty short, there’s not much for those who are not fans, and even those will find themselves stuck sometimes with not so noble reasons, like complicated puzzles or IQ tests, but when you’re in the jungle, scared that the black smoke monster may appear, you feel in Lost, and that is worth a lot to those who should be buying this game.
