I’ve been pirouetting my iPhone in the hopes that I can get my balloon to the end zone and pass a level on this game. It’s crazy if you were to see someone play the game and not know what they were doing. You might think them insane perhaps.
Balloon in a Box, from Mongoose Devworks, has you in control of a balloon in, well, a box. The box is in fact a maze and you have to navigate the maze by spinning your iPhone about which gives the balloon direction.
Along the way you’ll encounter fans, spikes and switches which will all work for or against you. You’re scored on time and obviously the faster you navigate the maze, the more points you score.
The graphics aren’t all that fantastic in the game as it’s just a balloon in a box with brightly colored walls that you’re looking at from a top down perspective. But somehow it works. The sound is fairly basic but the music in the game is great and gives you a ballet-like soundtrack to spin your iPhone to.
There are two ways to play the game in Box and Maze mode but really the goal is the same and only the sizes of the levels are different.
But for a cool little iPhone game it’s not bad. It won’t have you playing for hours on end but it’s an interesting distraction that I think could be used as the basis for a top-down adventure game. In its present version it’s certainly worth a look and could have some of you iPirouetting for hours.
