Item reviewed: What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord 2 on PSP

Remember when Dungeon Keeper was new? Where you had to build a dungeon and populate it with monsters to beat the level? Now take that game idea, turn it into an 8-bit like game for the PSP and poof! you’ve got What Did I do to Deserve This My Lord?! 2 (My Lord 2 for brevity). I find it odd that a lot of companies have gone back to an 8-bit look for games on the PSP when it is capable of so much more. However, the games are still good (see 30 Second Hero) and so you can’t fault their focus on gameplay.

What?! You didn’t play the first My Lord title?! Well My Lord, let’s get you filled in on some background shall we? As the God of Destruction you have to build dungeons that will prevent the heroes who are coming from surviving. You do that by wielding your trusty pick-axe and growing monsters through the movement and accumulation of nutrients. Now it might all sound confusing, but lucky for you, there’s an ample tutorial.

The game features some complex gameplay mechanics and a monster-populated ecosystem that has an odd sort of random distribution system for mana and nutrients. These collect in stones and when you break them to expand your dungeon creatures are born.

Even with a 12-part tutorial, mastering all of the facets of the game is time-consuming and tricky. The random distribution system can often prove your demise as you think one thing will happen and you can create more powerful creatures but in reality you don’t quite get that.

Our Rating for What Did I Do to Deserve This My Lord?! 2 Review (PSP)
8.0
Replay
The campaign is short but challenging and there are some other options of gameplay available also.
6.5
Graphics
Unnecessarily retro is what I might term them. They don’t detract from the game, but don’t add much to look at either.
6.5
Sound
Similar to the graphics, lightweight and could have been better but don’t damage the game experience.
8.5
Gameplay
There are a lot of things you need to learn to play the game successfully. It will take time and is challenging and gives you a sense of satisfaction upon completion
0.0
Multiplayer/Online Content
7.5
Overall
This isn’t a game that will appeal to everyone but those that it does appeal to will find hours of gameplay and challenging levels to solve.
