Item reviewed: Hamlet on PC

I was really enjoying this game, breezing along, solving puzzles enjoying the unique art and decent storyline...and then I hit this one stupid level that requires you to rapidly click notes from a guitar and I thought "how does this fit into the scheme of things?"

The answer is quite simple, it doesn’t. It’s eternally frustrating. Talk about blowing a really good game. I was so fed up that I actually walked away from the computer, not just stopped playing the game. It’s just ridiculously 2lame, like they ran out of cool puzzles to throw at you and decided that this twitch crap was the best solution.

In my book, they simply failed in the game design department on that level. And it’s really a shame as the rest of the game is great yet completely marred by this lack of imagination. Not only do the notes move but they’re infinitely picky about being clicked in the proper place so even if you’re a pixel off the note graphic, you’ll have to start over.

The rest of the game is pretty cool. It’s a classic point-and-click adventure and story (princess kidnapped, hero must save princess). Eventually, after a couple dozen tries, you’ll manage to get lucky enough and pass the level to progress. But the bad taste will remain as you continue to push forward.

The art style, as I mentioned, is pretty cool. It’s got a hand-drawn and painted quality to it and while the animations are simple by design they’re enough to keep you interested. The levels aren’t too complex in regards to the detail, but enough so that you stay focused. The sound is equally spartan but adequate and helps to build the atmosphere.

Our Rating for Hamlet Review (PC)
2.0
Replay
Even without the annoying twitch click levels there’s little to no reason to return.
9.0
Graphics
Cool art style even if they are less-detailed than some other games.
9.0
Sound
Ambient sounds help create a good atmosphere and there’s nothing annoying about them.
7.0
Gameplay
Good puzzles except for some stupidly annoying twitch click levels. Only 1.5 - 3 hours of gameplay

Multiplayer/Online Content
6.5
Overall
Extremely short for even a $10 game. It’s a decent game but seems like many will be disappointed in the price vs. gameplay area. True PnC adventure fans will enjoy it.
