The game continues on from the first installment and will see the conclusion of the story. The Dark Lineage will tak you to places where the ’things’ of the past still live and all the memories that should be long-forgotten are still remembered. A town called Arkhamend, creepy locations, secret cults and underground complexes are all par for the course.
Darkness Within 2: The Dark Lineage, from Iceberg Interactive and Zoetrope Interactive, is a slow burning mystery horror adventure game combining elements of the point-and-click genre with more action-based adventure gaming. You take a first-person perspective as Detective Howard E. Loreid after his search for Loath Nolder. Now you awaken, confused, lost and with a note from Loath giving you directions to continue the journey.
From a graphics standpoint, the game isn’t all that well-done. Often things look flat, lifeless and uninteresting. Textures seem muddled and low quality, NPC are robotic and stiff and generally the game looks like it was made in one of those freely available game making programs. Fortunately, this is only mildly distracting from time to time. Then again, at other times the textures and graphics are quite good. It’s really sort of a mix. Plants and other objects are completely flat, two-dimensional and lifeless, but then some interior areas are extremely well detailed and visually interesting. Of course, the game didn’t allow for screenshots to be taken while playing to give you an ample demonstration. Jacking up all the graphics in the options helped eliminate a lot of those "ugh, that’s ugly" moments, but did nothing at all in those really bad areas like the 2D plants.
