The Worms Reloaded Tournament at the Intel NW Lanfest was a big hit and was one of the most participated tournaments of the entire LANfest. In the first night, there was a crowd of about 30-45 people who wanted to participate in the worms tournament, sadly we only had 20 keys to give away and the lucky winners from the draw lined up and received their badge of honor stating they had gotten worms from Team 17 and Gamers Daily News.
On the next afternoon the tournament was held with 23 players including others that had purchased the game on their own. We decided to have a tournament hot seat style with players being paired off with someone on the competition ladder and sitting side-by-side as they tried to eliminate their opponent’s worms by any means necessary. Everywhere I looked for a few hours was a worm battle screen with strangers becoming friends and playing against each other, it was truly what the spirit of gaming and being a gamer is all about.
I saw TNT thrown, ninja ropes dangling, and sensor mines being dropped at each others feet as each player clawed tooth and nail to make it to the finals. They tunneled, they cried, they laughed, even occasionally screamed out in frustration as their Worm strategy backfired (*POW*) and they exploded in a cloud of TNT with a large Biff screen-print to add to their humiliating defeat.
In the end there could only be two in the final and Matt “teh0mega” Reiter defeated John “Pancake” Motter in one of the semi-finals matches, meanwhile on the other side of the room, Gordon “Lethal Mongoose” Cooper battled Michael “backwards” Johnson, to bring his Worms the taste of sweet victory and therefore went on to the finals. The administrators of the tournament had the final match planned on the big screen for all LAN attendees to watch, but this was unknown to the 2 finalists, who read their names off the tournament ladder and began the final on their own.. The final match pitted Matt “teh0mega” Reiter vs Gordon “Lethal Mongoose” Cooper, as they fought, each bringing their best worms to the battle, strategizing and trying to gain the advantage with a perfect volley from their worm arsenal. It was such an epic battle that both players had battled to a complete draw. This was indeed lucky for us, as their second seating was performed on the big screen as planned, and recorded so all fans could enjoy the spectacle. This tournament was definitely one for the record books and a battle for the ages.
