Lylian: Episode 1- Paranoid Friendship Review (PC)

Let me get this out of the way right now, Lylian is short; extremely short. It’s so short that it can be beaten in one sitting. By a casual gamer. Let me also get this out of the way, Lylian is a game with a very intriguing story to tell, a story that, if you are absorbed into the game’s storytelling, will leave you eagerly anticipating it’s sequel. Unfortunately, it’s length, even for a 5 dollar title, will leave you feeling somewhat ripped off. In fact, I cannot recommend this game to anyone who has a hard time buying any game, no matter the price. Of course, the fact that this is only Episode 1 foreshadows this. Now, for those of you who want excellent story telling, or at least a game that makes you interested in what happens next, Lylian is the game for you, ironically, the fact that this is only Episode 1 will end up leaving you with more questions and just about not a single answer, so for those of you impatient in your storytelling, I’d recommend waiting until all the episodes themselves are released.
For all of it’s storytelling, Lylian’s presentation is somewhat boring. It’s graphics are reminiscent of games from the late 90s, and it’s combat is extremely boring. The opening video that plays is good but, sadly, it looks as if it were fast fowarded and is low resolution. In actuality, the entire game is in a pretty low resolution, with no resolution options, this is a game that is a love song to the old days when OddWorld Abe’s Odyssey and games like the legendary Planescape: Torment were king. Lylian’s combat is also reminiscent of the late 90s; it’s combat is a simplistic as can be, you only have 1 attack button and three attack types: a jumping attack, a running attack, and your normal attack; combining all of these is the key to victory. This makes combat, though not quite boring since the you’ll be frequently fighting a large amount of enemies, it can make it tiring when you’re constantly mashing a single button and seeing the same attack animation repeat itself. |

| Our Rating for Lylian: Episode 1- Paranoid Friendship Review (PC) | |
| 3.0 | Replay Lylian is extremely short, and a handful of collectibles will probably make you play the game once more, but aside from the unmotivating, Lylian lacks any replay value |
| 6.0 | Graphics The graphics aren’t horrible, but they do feel out of place in our current graphics generation; it constantly feels as if you’re playing a game from the late 1990s. |
| 8.0 | Sound The graphics aren’t horrible, but thy do feel out of place in our current graphics generation; it constantly feels as if you’re playing a game from the late 1990s. |
| 6.0 | Gameplay The gameplay is definitely not Lylian’s strong point, with almost no varitey in attack animations, and a section of the game that was frustrating, not because of your skill, but because of the way Lylian jumps, the gameplay ends up being carried by the story. |

Overall Lylian is close to being a great game, if it weren’t for its lackluster gameplay, presentation, and length. It tells a great story that, if it sucks you in, will leave you almost dying to play Episode 2, but if you dislike or don’t care for the story, Lylian will be a drudge through a game that could have been much better. |
