Magicka Hands-on Preview

So our friends at Paradox granted us early beta access to one of the latest games coming from their publishing arm, Arrowhead Studios’ Magicka. This is a game that I played last summer at GamesCom and thought quite fun. However, that was apparently running on a very specific environment because I’ve run into all manner of problems with the game here in the office. Now we won’t talk about any actual technical things because, well, it’s still in beta and not released yet. So we’ll talk about all the other stuff instead.
The game sets you in the role of a wizard (surprise) who has to go out and save the world. Yah! There’s some rather humorous yet heavy handed voice acting in it which includes a guy named Vlad (who annoyingly and constantly reminds you that he’s not a vampire, yet most likely will turn out to be) and some others. It’s all in Swedish currently which sort of makes you chuckle from time to time.
The story goes that there was a powerful wizard Grimnir, who wanted to harness the power of all Magicks and return the Order of Magic to its former glory. Other wizards became petty and threatened by him, so they locked him away at World’s End. He’ll probably be the main bad guy who probably escaped from his prison, or not. That remains to be seen.
The game is set to offer 13 levels of gameplay in the campaign mode but also will include challenges and all of it is both single player and co-op with up to three friends.
