Red Faction: Armageddon Review (Xbox 360)

I ran through the story in about seven hours in Red Faction: Armageddon, as opposed to Red Faction: Guerrilla which took me far longer. The major difference, aside from the actual amount of gameplay, is the way the two are completely different from each other. In Guerrilla you were on the surface of Mars and had massive areas to drive around, things to destroy, challenges to meet and things to collect.
In Armageddon, you’re in an on-rails third person shooter where you are running through underground caves and interlinking areas. So while the basis is similar, it is very different.
Now I enjoyed the game and have been putting further time into the other modes: Infestation and Ruin. But I’m very, very disappointed in THQ. Ruin mode was included as an unlockable content piece via a code and all it is, is the newly named destruction challenges that were available right in the main gameplay of Guerrilla.
I know what you’re doing THQ and I don’t like it, not one bit. Not only did you take away most of the exploration and the vast open areas of Guerrilla, but you then pulled a very Red Faction piece of gameplay out of the actual game and put it in an add-on mode so what? You can get a few extra bucks from those gamers that buy the game second hand and will need to buy it? It’s just poor form as you are basically removing content from a game that people pay full price for. After all, did you not include it in the previous games? You did, and now it seems you’re pulling away from the gamers and falling in line with the other big publishers who we know do not care about anything but the bottom line.
In fact, I’m rather displeased with the overall changes from Guerrilla to Armageddon. The loss of exploration, the removal of destruction challenges whittle away the gameplay to a very repetitive run and gun with little thought for anything else. Hell, even the collectibles were extremely easy to get with little effort. While some might believe that any Red Faction title crossing my desk would instantly get a 9, this game will not, Red Faction or not.
