Based on the best book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones: Genesis (GOTG) has been met with a lot of skepticism. People have feared that the game would be gimmicky or stale or overly complicated or even a clone of Age of Empires. Others have feared that the game simply wouldn’t do the books justice. Even I was worried that the game was going to be mediocre at best and just another time killer.

I am pleased to lay all of these fears to rest. A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a game that is sure to be a pleasant surprise this year. This game has something for everyone. Strategy, treachery, diplomacy, war. No matter what your style of play, this game will have you playing for hours on end.

Now before we go too far, I must admit that I have not read the books. Not for lack of desire, but for lack of time. So, to present a fair review, I asked a few people who had read the books to see if A Game of Thrones: Genesis stacked up to it. Unanimously, the answer was a resounding yes. Everyone told me that the game not only does the books justice, but it really leaves you with the sense that the decisions that you make could actually change the course of events in Westeros, the mythical land in which the story takes place.

Before You Start A Game of Thrones: Genesis

To start out, you need to read the manual and go through the tutorial. Both are painstakingly long, but they are really necessary to provide you with the basic overview of the gameplay mechanics. It may even seem a bit overwhelming as you read through the instructions and click the things A Game of Thrones: Genesis tells you to, but don’t get nervous. If you take the time to do these tasks, then when you start the single player campaign, the game will just come naturally.
