When I was at CES 2012 this year I saw something that was pretty cool. Two players, on the same TV, both with full screen images. How is it being accomplished? Several companies have their own take on it but the simplest one I saw was using 3D technology.
Essentially, in the most passive version, both gamers had on a pair of 3D glasses. However, Player One had on a pair with two left lenses while Player Two had on a pair with two right lenses. That way the images were put out to each person and each person had a full-screen image. Of course, this wouldn’t work with more than two players, at least not now.
Today I saw that Philips announced they also have dual-view capabilities in some of their TVs, in addition to what I saw from Samsung and LG and of course the Playstation 3D display.
Philips is the latest TV manufacturer to announce this new set of features in their sets. The fact is that any passive 3D display could do it.
In some multiplayer situations you don’t want the other player to know where you are and what you’re doing while in some, the game experience is diminished through split screen gaming, racing games come to mind in that latter situation and first person shooters for that first scenario.
