Amy Speaks Out....On Sequels & Game Franchises
Posted by Amy ShortZ Baldry, 67 days ago Nov 21, 2008

Don’t you just love it when there’s a brand new game out on the scene and you get enveloped in it until you play it so much you can’t possibly get any further!. Then you discover that they are bringing a sequel or expansion out and the nail biting wait for its release lures. But do sequels always meet the expectations of the ever growing and changing aspects of what we assume with the newer versions of games?, Or do we sometimes wonder why they even bothered producing anything that would do the original game to injustice, due to the changes that have been made that make the game experience different than the original version?n

I’ve played a few games in my 22 years of being a gamer and I’ve always loved looking for different things that challenge me and take up new concepts in game play, I remember when The Sims first appeared on our PC’s and the new idea of making someone else’s life successful (or a misery) and designing your own dream home was awesome and as time went on Maxis would release expansions that would give your Sim a new range of furniture or another place to go hang out.

But although the games were being mass produced by some giant Sim-filled idea machine expansions kept coming, I felt it all got a bit too repetitive and although the expansions were offering you more in the way of game play it just seemed like it was becoming a money-spinner. I hold my hat up high to the people who thought and made the game as it was a very successful and revolutionary game but after a time it got a bit monotonous and I felt like I didn’t want to waste my money on a game so that my virtual person could have the latest fine furniture.

Games like GTA are also another excellent series of games although the gunplay stays the same, the theme and the environment which you are in varies from each version of the GTA series, offering gamers a more engaging experience each time they play, by it being different maps a different decade and the content of the games that change to accompany the storyline you follow while progressing through. This in itself makes GTA one of the most awaited game releases around when the guys at Rock star games have new things to offer.

There are a lot of times I love sequels, but there are also a lot of times I don’t.  For instance, I can’t wait for God of War III, but I think they should have ended the Tomb Raider franchise a long time ago.

yeah i can see where your comin from on the tomb raider franchise but then the same could be said for the super mario brothers series, they are the trademarks of the consoles they were originally designed for its just the gameplay that changes.

Maybe its just another way of showing how the developers are evolving thier products, but there must be a market out there somewhere for it otherwise they would’nt be so sucessfull time upon time.

I think the franchises that break the mold and are innovative are the ones that we want to keep around forever. Mario has always been innovative even back in the standard platform days. Look at all the innovation they have brought to platform gaming over the years.

Tomb Raider on the other, never really been innovative. More of a ’same story, same style’ throughout the whole thing and there’s very little innovation. If you compare the game experience of the first and last and take out the graphics and sound changes...what are you left with?

The Sims, (note the image I used in this article) is just stupid with additions now and the additions don’t really add GAMEPLAY, they add items. Not unlockable items but purchasable items...heh that just is totally confusing to me.

I definately see your point, but I don’t think it anyone would disagree with the developers taking a few years off of the Tomb Raider franchise to regroup and innovate the series. Look how long it took them to get it right from the last good Tomb Raider game to Tomb Raider: Legend.
