Exclusive Interview with Boxed Dreams about Ceville

Posted by Christophor Rick,

[GDN] Where did the initial idea for Ceville come from? Was it a group effort or was it born from the mind of one person?

[BD] It’s difficult to tell in retrospective, as much of the Story of Ceville has evolved over some time and resulted from group effort. But the initial basic idea for Ceville - playing the evil ex-tyrant of a
fantasy realm - came from our Creative Director Christian in spring 2006.

[GDN] The character designs are all very distinct in the game, how were they decided upon?

[BD] We gave our concept artist Boris a lot of freedom here. Meaning we provided him with a basic character-sheet including some character-traits and a very short description of his/her role in the game. Only the more important
characters were discussed at greater length. This approach will not work with everybody, but with Boris it was just perfect. He already had a lot of experience with designing visually unique comic characters from previous
movie projects, therefore all but two of his character concepts went straight into modelling as he succeeded to completely capturing what we wanted in the characters.

[GDN] Boxed Dreams is an interesting name for a developer, where did the name for the company come from? What’s the idea behind it?

[BD] Chris, Josh, Korbinian and myself wanted a name that all of us really liked, so we had some long evenings of discussion and our long list of potential names got shorter and shorter until none remained. Thats when we threw away
all the fancy names that sounded cool but had no meaning and tried to get back to what we really wanted to do: and that was to create fictionary worlds that would finally end up in a box - be it a package/PC or console.
