Sony’s European President David Reeves recently denied that there will be a cut in the price on the PS3. I have a hard time with this denial. As we all know even with the price drop from E3, it has jumped the amount of consoles bought by 135%, and though the more PS 3 consoles were sold than the X360 the overall amount, is still overwhelming on Microsofts side. More bad news coming out of the Sony camp with the company posting the largest loss in the last four years (bloomberg.com), directly associated with the PS3.
There are other indicators in my book that Sony needs to do something soon to be able to compete within the upcoming holiday season. The blu-ray got dealt a heavy blow recently when Paramount Pictures dropped their support, if you think about it in gaming text, thats a huge blow. The movies that they are behind that have recently been released or in the future that will be released that have heavy relations with gaming, such as Transformers, Beowulf, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and others. Sony has been banking on that the blu-ray to take hold which of course would also help the PS 3, but up to this point, the battle is still waging, though it seems its starting to be loosing its grip. The other is third party support, at the moment the X360 has so much more to offer, granted some of it has to do with the time frame of the two consoles release date, but many developers are stating that the price and the complications of the PS 3 is almost not worth the time, effort or money to produce games. They have also mentioned with the higher price of the console itself, that limits who is going to have access to their games.
As you have probably noticed I haven’t mentioned the Wii in this article, and honestly there is no comparison, as the Wii is a whole different console and has a larger demographic than the other two, with the type of games offered and the price tag itself, so for this piece I dont think it belongs in the race.
Now when will this happen is the question, granted their are many options to choose from and I’m making my prediction here. My predictions is at the Tokyo Game Show. To me, and most gaming PR there are only two major gaming industry conventions left in 2007. The Tokyo Game Show and E for All. Now lets look at the dates, the Tokyo show is September 20-23 and E for All is October 18-21. It makes sense that the announcement would be in at the end of September as by the end of October, most retailers are in full swing into the holiday season. Heck most stores here are already involved with Halloween and thats not for almost two months away. The headquarters of Sony is also in Japan, so who best to make this announcement but the parent company.
I guess we will have to see how close to the truth Ill hit, but it’s Wade’s World and I like it here.
I will be writing this column once a week, hopefully they will be published on Mondays, and these are my own opinions and do not represent anyone else’s on the staff. If you have anything to contribute please email me or post in the forums.
