Each episode should last you about three to four
hours, and if played in the intended order they tell a very amusing story that brilliantly comes together toward the end. You’ll have plenty of laughs along the way, and very few topics are safe; just about every part of modern life gets mocked at some point. The writers at Telltale are equal opportunity comedians; they’ll take a shot at big government in one episode then poke fun at libertarians and conspiracy theorists in another, then spoof cooking shows while requiring you to come up with some creative uses for the food featured on it.
Along the way, you’ll enjoy a variety of colorful and interesting locations to play in, with lots of unique characters to talk to. It’s all accompanied by a great variety of music, some of which was good enough to justify its own soundtrack disc (sold separately on Telltale’s website). The voice acting is great as well, delivering most of the jokes and plot in just the right tone to be silly without ’hamming it up.’
These things combine with the great writing to really pull you in, and you’ll be glad to overlook the fact that this is such an easy game.
But there are a few caveats. The first is a hardware limitation, since Sam & Max Season One was originally a Windows game. That means it was built around a higher video resolution than the Wii offers, so things got crunched down a little to fit the screen. This isn’t a major problem, but it does make a few puzzles slightly harder since you might fail to see objects you need. It also blurs some text in the background, which will cause you to miss out on a few good jokes. This is joined by some audio bugs which cause occasional skips in the music and also result in some dialogue ending a few syllables before it should. Finally, while most load times are very fast (roughly three to six seconds per room, which is fine), you will notice load times of up to half a minute for car chase scenes. None of these really doom the game, but they’re unfortunate and I hope that Season Two corrects at least the audio bugs.
