Offering something for everyone seems to be the main goal of The Munchables. Veteran gamers will find the basic gameplay too easy, so they may enjoy searching for the hidden acorns in each stage; getting all of them unlocks a special bit of attire for your character such as a chef’s hat or indian chief head-dress. Younger players and those not as familiar with platforming games will probably enjoy the general flow, since each stage is very well designed and only a few require any backtracking. A second player can even join in, blasting enemies to make it easier for the main player to proceed. Combined with the solid graphics and music, this is a well presented game that should entertain a variety of players.

There are a few problems, however. A couple of stages toward the end have some severe framerate drops... not unplayable, but enough to make it harder. And the camera is usually good, but it’s hard to tell just how far away some things are at times which can be a problem in boss battles. Finally, the game is somewhat short; each of the twenty-four main stages can be cleared within five to fifteen minutes, and it’s only the addition of an unlockable character and mirrored stages for time trials (see how fast you can clear this reversed level, basically) that make the length acceptable.

Ultimately, The Munchables does a lot of things right. It’s simple but fun, and accessible to almost anyone; only those Wii owners who are baffled at the mere thought of pressing any buttons for any reason would have problems with this. And at a budget price of thirty dollars, this one is definitely worth a look.

Our Rating for The Munchables Review (Wii)
5.5
Replay
There is an unlockable character, and the option to do time trials through reversed stages. It’s just enough to keep you playing a little longer.
8.0
Graphics
Simple in design, but colorful and cute. It alternates between looking like papercraft art and cartoony 3D, and it works well.
8.0
Sound
Excellent music really sets the tone; fast beats encourage you to hunt down the pirates.
7.0
Gameplay
Simple to learn, but fast and fun, The Munchables keeps you on task. It does get repetitive after a while and is a little short, however.
6.0
Multiplayer
A second player can help out by blasting enemies to help the main player, which could be fun for families.
7.0
Overall
A genuinely enjoyable game with plenty of appeal to virtually any player, and proof that ’Wii casual game’ doesn’t have to be the equivalent of a profanity to veteran gamers.
