Jim Cook’s WiiWare/VC Commentary #2

Posted by Jim Cook, 268 days ago

Full reviews will be along shortly, but in the meantime I’d love to make a few recommendations if you have some unused Wii Points lying around.

Alien Crush Returns (800 Points) - Here’s an odd one, a sequel to the TG-16 pinball classic known as Alien Crush. But it’s a good one, with a few different tables and physics-changing ’Action Balls’ keeping things interesting. The multiplayer offerings aren’t as convenient as I’d like, but all in all it’s a decent package for your money.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (1500 Points) - One of the most expensive games on the service, but quite satisfying. Unlike most Crystal Chronicles games, this one is sort of ’third person SimCity’; you play as a young king who, along with a cadre of refugees, move into an abandoned city and rebuild it. You pick where homes and stores are built, recruit adventurers and send them out on tasks, and eventually work toward solving the mysteries of the magic that lets your city grow. Definitely pass on the downloadable content, you don’t need it to beat the game and it adds very little, but the basic game for 1500 points is great.

World of Goo (1500 Points) - Also very expensive, but also very good. Gameplay revolves around using various goo blobs together to solve physics-based puzzles. You can do things like build a ’goo bridge’ to get the rest of the goo balls to the end of the level, with a few fun things to do between stages. Definitely give this one a try if you’ve somehow missed the overwhelmingly positive reviews the game has already received.
