Bubble Bobble Plus is a simple idea, but it has plenty of depth that isn’t immediately obvious. There are several hidden power-ups, with benefits like increasing your speed or letting you defeat enemies by ramming into them (no bubbles necessary). There are also a few tricks to be done with bubbles, such as letting them rise and then springboarding off them to a higher platform. A few levels are also more like puzzles than tests of platforming skill, requiring you to find solutions to some unusual challenges. And best of all, you can play with a friend in the Standard levels, or have up to four players in the Arrange levels. Combined with the graphics and sound capturing the feel of the original while bringing them up to modern standards, there’s a lot to be pleased with here.
It’s hard to find much wrong with this game, as the only real flaw it has is a lack of online play. Yes, there are leader boards and such for comparing your score with other players, but no true online play. This is disappointing, but it’s also the only real issue the game has. Bubble Bobble Plus shows that the original gameplay is still a lot of fun, and at 600 points it’s easily one of the best deals on WiiWare.
