EA @ E3 2008

Spore (DS, Mac, Mob, PC)

Though I was only able to get my hands on the creature creator, this game is a bit different than most you’ve ever seen. Some of the promos have been talking that this will be a game that the whole family can and probably will get involved with. Apparently you start out as a little dude and you have to make your new friend grow avoiding bigger and badder creatures, collecting things which will help you develop your character, within the creature character. The graphics are crisp, but please don’t expect out of this world graphics (unlike some of the creatures, we’ve seen) I feel this could be a good game to spend time with and never get bored, and thoughI haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, I can see this as a game with many, many downloadable add-ons down the road.

Dead Space (PC, PS3, X360)

I’ve been somewhat intrigued by this title ever since it was mentioned, but as we all know, judging a game by the trailers and screenshots that are released, never seems to give it the right look, until we get it out of the box. Thats when most of the time we are disappointed or somewhat satisfied but it doesnt really bring the joy we would like. I don’t see Dead Space being in this situation.

This sci-fi horror seems to stand alone as when it comes to quality in all aspects. The game artistically is just so beautifully done (which seems odd to say, considering the extremely high gore that is in this game) and can’t think of too many other games within the walls of LACC, that can compare. The gameplay is a bit different as you don’t just blast your way through the monsters, but there are certain ways you have to dismember them before they will die. There are many weapons and superpowers that are through out the game.

Mirror’s Edge  (PC, PS3, X360)

Last but definetly not least, this game is very different than anything we have seen in a while. One of the most interesting items of this game, is that in the press conference, it was almost challenged to get through this game without firing a single shot. Apparently, there are several ways of finishing this game, though if the understanding is correct the outcome is the same, but that would make the replay value way up there. You are a Runner called Faith. Mirror’s Edge delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in combat and fast paced chases. With a very different sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith’s world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous. Live or die? Soar or plummet? One thing is certain, in this city you will learn how to run.

The premise of this game makes it unique and the whole game play seemed a bit odd to me, though once we got to see the demo, my hesitation turned into anticipation and can’t wait for the release, even if at this time we don’t have any idea when its going to happen. Oh well, I’ll have to find something else to occupy my time till then.

Overall, I was impressed with EA’s line-up and I know I didn’t write about all the games, that EA had but I think I touched on the major ones. Maybe later in the week, Ill have sometime to write about later. I’m saying this here first, I truely believe if that Dynamic DNA is successful in the NBA Live franchise, we will be seeing a this in their other sport games. I could easily see it working in Madden, NHL, FIFA, etc. Talk about truely playing like your heros.
