Sadly, the thing that bothered me the most about Stoneloops of Jurassica is the most important aspect of any arcade game, the gameplay. It isn’t even so much the gameplay’s fault but the controls. If ever there was an arcade game that could use a crosshair, it is this game. Instead, the game uses a slider, which forces you to grab whatever is directly in front of you. I imagine this set-up would work perfect with a console, but there is no reason for it on a PC.
Since you can only grab rocks that are closest to you, the game makes the vertical stages practically impossible at times. There are several stages that rely completely on your luck of getting one of the nine different power-ups. On the plus-side, the power-ups are very neat and feature some unique powers that, I at least, have never seen before in another arcade game. The only kicker about the power-ups is how they are acquired.
After over 75 levels I still don’t understand how to get them, but I do know they will magically pop on screen from time to time and when they do you must catch them. There was more than once that I would suddenly destroy 15 to 20 blocks, but the reason was completely unknown to me.
Overall, StoneLoops! of Jurassica is a very fun game that can create some intense moments thanks to its high production values. Unfortunately, graphics and sound can only go so far before the gameplay must take over and soar. So unless you have $20 to spend, I highly suggest just playing the 60 minute trial of the game and calling it a day.
