Fighting is fairly simple with the familiar options of attacking, defending, using a spell or skill as it’s known here, and of course using an item from your inventory, typical RPG format again, apart from an extra option to "rush" which speeds the battle up by automatically having all of your characters use attacks so no more constantly selecting attack manually for those repetitive random battles. There’s nothing straying far from the norm here with the battles other than a very annoying absence of the option to escape or flee, it becomes a pain when you’re fighting something that takes very little damage from you and deals out hefty damage.
Without the option to flee there is no choice but to either aimlessly attack your foe in the hope you’ll somehow avoid your pending death, or if you want to just get on with the game and skip past a pointless battle you have no choice but to defeat it which I would guess is the reason for the rush option but I really struggle to see the point of it considering the initial problem.
You can save at any point in the game making the adventure a bit easier and if you are defeated in battle you are revived by the gods for 10% of your money before being transported back to the nearest town, it makes those big bosses less of a worry and should you die at any point with the loss of some cash you won’t lose the experience or items gained beforehand. It’s appealing to have the difficulty eased a bit with this but personally I like the idea of only having save points in certain areas, it means I’m thinking tactically while making the right preparations and therefore enhancing the experience as well as the feeling of satisfaction upon victory.
The story progresses a little strangely at first as things are confusing for the first hour or so but it does pick itself up in a steady and strange fashion, the back story is forced out through the dialogue with scenes of prolonged discussion between your characters going on about events from the past making it slightly tedious at times and quite often confusing. The plot does thicken well as every step further is made through the vast lands of Laxius Force and once you have the general idea of what went on previously it becomes more interesting to know what is happening in the present and in classic RPG form becomes a gripping tale of good, evil, romance, and heroism which will keep you entertained throughout this old school journey of fantasy.
