Amy Speaks Out....On Sequels & Game Franchises
Posted by Amy ShortZ Baldry, 116 days ago

Even the way that some games progress from console to console can be for some (and also the game) the best thing since sliced bread, But for others not so much, that’s another thing that may be based on personal preference you may haved loved playing Zelda or Tomb Raider on your Game Boy or PlayStation, but when the different versions were released on Wii and it felt like you were actually Zelda or Miss Croft while playing the game, it offered more engagement with the game itself making gameplay completely different to anything we had seen before. While other gamers are happy to sit there on their consoles and use standard joy pads, but not necessarily getting less involved with the games as the network play they offer can bring people together in teams or competitions.

I’m a big believer in games getting better and better the more they bring out and if games can improve and progress so much in the short time that I’ve been part of the planet then I’m always excited about a new game release that looks interesting and offers more exciting ways of getting more engrossed and active ways of game play. But if the expansions get too repetitive and I don’t feel as though I’m being taken in any more I may wander off into another of the many game realms that are on offer to occupy my time.

There are a lot of times I love sequels, but there are also a lot of times I don’t.  For instance, I can’t wait for God of War III, but I think they should have ended the Tomb Raider franchise a long time ago.

yeah i can see where your comin from on the tomb raider franchise but then the same could be said for the super mario brothers series, they are the trademarks of the consoles they were originally designed for its just the gameplay that changes.

Maybe its just another way of showing how the developers are evolving thier products, but there must be a market out there somewhere for it otherwise they would’nt be so sucessfull time upon time.

I think the franchises that break the mold and are innovative are the ones that we want to keep around forever. Mario has always been innovative even back in the standard platform days. Look at all the innovation they have brought to platform gaming over the years.

Tomb Raider on the other, never really been innovative. More of a ’same story, same style’ throughout the whole thing and there’s very little innovation. If you compare the game experience of the first and last and take out the graphics and sound changes...what are you left with?

The Sims, (note the image I used in this article) is just stupid with additions now and the additions don’t really add GAMEPLAY, they add items. Not unlockable items but purchasable items...heh that just is totally confusing to me.

I definately see your point, but I don’t think it anyone would disagree with the developers taking a few years off of the Tomb Raider franchise to regroup and innovate the series. Look how long it took them to get it right from the last good Tomb Raider game to Tomb Raider: Legend.
