At the beginning I really sucked at this game.. I mean I really SUCKED! I found the time constraint imposed on you when you played the single player option of the game meant you couldn’t really develop an effective and rewarding strategy. I also found that in single player mode your opponent’s army seems to spawn in vast numbers even on the easiest settings. Also there seems to be an issue with the rebalancing of the opposing sides in the single player option, just as you seemed to be gaining the upper hand your opposition seemed to suddenly gain access to a large amount of far superior weapons drops. This can often unfairly tip the balance in the game to your opponent’s advantage. But a few days into playing, I did manage to get the knack of this game and it then became a much more enjoyable challenge.
I don’t play many games of this type, yet I found it an enjoyable experience.
I would think that the multiplayer mode of this game would be more evenly matched as you would then be playing against a person who is just as likely to make errors and be fallible as you are. I did find this an enjoyable way to pass a few hours, though I can see where it would not be as rewarding for someone who is a seasoned game player who might not find it especially rewarding or challenging to the old gray matter.
Graphically it is very minimalist and retro in nature, with very simple angular pixel men and with its green angular hills and grid like backgrounds it brought back memories of Tron. At first I didn’t like the retro kind of look but after a while I did warm to its charms and those of my little matchstick army. The controls on this game I found fairly easy to come to grips with, being a combination of the mouse, WSAD keys and the space bar. It is also another one of the more reasonably priced games out on the market, which, as you know, I am always in favour of.
Overall the gameplay experience was a good one and even though there are some balancing issues it was enjoyable.
Editor’s Note: I have challenged Anne to some online play and we will see how the balancing and gameplay are in the multiplayer arena. Perhaps it might improve the overall score and game value. -CR
