[GDN] So did the games prevent the attack from happening as long as they did? Had Klebold and Harris never played Doom would the even have happened at a much sooner time?
[Block] I wish it were that simple. The games and the computer, more generally, are very supportive and provide a useful/harmless outlet for aggression. However, when used to excess it isolates, deskills people on how to handle difficult emotions, offers the illusion of a better, fairer world, and delays conflict. When, however, the "cord is cut," the resulting rage can be tremendous. So the computer is a mixed bag; it can both exacerbate but delay a crisis.
[GDN] If so, do you feel it was more of the parents’ fault or the games’ fault?
[Block] Neither. Parents were seemed quite loving and tried to do what they could. Both sets of parents used different techniques (permissive vs. restrictive) and Harris was placed into treatment. Neither was it the games, per se. Rather, it was the peculiar way that people and technology can bond and interact that was ONE of the factors. There were, of course, many others -- as discussed elsewhere.
[GDN] What measures, if any, should be taken to limit the sale of M rated games to minors?
[Block] I am not terrible concerned by this issue. Current laws/enforcement is fine by me. I would use parental judgment as the primary means of enforcement.
