Exclusive Interview with Dr. Jerald Block

Posted by Alex Element457 Ramirez,

[GDN] If so, why are they more susceptible than someone who cheers on an actual defensive player to tackle the player who eventually breaks his leg?

[Block] Cheering, in a crowd, with friends, outside, in a social setting...you get the idea.  Of course, if they are cheering, drinking beer...well, other issues come up.

[GDN] Do you think there is enough evidence to prove violent games makes us more likely to commit violent crimes? If not, how do you think it will be until there is?

[Block] No.  I think the data is quite unclear.  If violent games lead to violence, I believe the relationship is weak.  However, I do think the immersion into the Virtual, usually through gaming, does lead to serious pathology in some people.  That includes violence, towards themselves or others.  I also believe that angry people tend to find angry games to play.  That is not to say that everyone who plays Doom or some such game is angry -- just that those with issues will select those types of games, preferentially (correlation but not causality, with regards to violent media exposure).

Yeah, I was pleasantly suprised by the interview. He had a lot of really good and logical statements.

Now  we just need to promote this article and get the information out there for everyone so it becomes common knowledge and lays to rest some of the misconceptions about video games, violence and the effects...
