Anne Reviews: PlayDetective Heartbreakers

Posted by Anne ScotchGuard Ross,

Any budding private detectives out there in games land?  Yes... then you should like this game. You play the part of a private detective hired to gather evidence about a cheating girlfriend/boyfriend or partner using surveillance, be it by eavesdropping on phone conversations, taking incriminating photos or deciphering their cell phone text messages.

After a briefing with your client where you are given pertinent information about the suspect, you then start to monitor their movements.  Checking out the neighbourhood for any relevant information or clues as to what is going on.   Along the way you can complete various mini-games which enable you to earn money to buy wire taps for telephone conversations, film and processing for your camera... stuff like that.  Through using these forms of surveillance you follow the suspect for a week to see whether the client’s suspicions are correct or not.  It also lets you perform a lie detector test on your suspect (cool or what?!), where you can ask your suspect various questions about there behaviour.

I loved the concept of this game. Well who wouldn’t want to run around and be a private detective for a while!  The idea of the game is simple and original with the games controls clear and simple to operate.  Collect enough evidence over the course of the week and you get the joy of watching the client confront their cheating partner in a very Cheaters style public confrontation.

The game is played out in an isometric, aerial view which gives it a feeling of The Sims with clever use of actors to play out the role of the suspects and clients.  Graphically it may have benefited from the possible addition of being able to change the view that you had other than just the aerial view, that being said the graphics are well laid out fairly well detailed.

Aurally it has the predictable gumshoe type music and maybe lacks from some added touches such as actually listening to the telephone conversation rather than just reading the transcript, but again it doesn’t detract from the game or become intensely annoying or distracting.

Replay
Hmmm reserving judgement slightly on this one. As it stands, not too much but lets see what the expansion packs bring shall we?
6.0
Graphics
Cute and cool with interesting use of real actors. Nicely presented overall.
5.0
Sound
As you would expect really.. good realistic sounds of camera, polygraph etc and thankfully not annoying or intrusive. Music is cheesy, more could have been done (like voices for phone conversations)
6.0
Gameplay
Nice clear and simple controls that did the job and got you from A to B
4.0
Multiplayer
There seems to be plenty of information online about the game, although I did not manage to get the online version of the game to work disappointingly
6.0
Overall
A very cool and interesting concept for a game. A few disappointing aspects to the game but lets see what comes with the planned expansion of cases. Who doesn’t enjoy a bit of spying now and again
