So, you can no doubt tell I like the graphics. A bit obvious I’ll admit, but surely the sound isn’t as good. Well, yes, it is. Everything from the really cutesy tune that will have everyone who plays the game humming it in their heads for days afterwards to the brilliant Stephen Fry lending his vocal talents to the tutorials positively reeks of quality. The fact there is a funny script of dialogue written means that when you
ARE learning what you have to do to get a level created, you do it with an enormous sense of fun, as well as achievement. As well as the setup already in place bathing your ears in audio kindness, the amount of music, FX and noises usable in the creation part of LBP help to just cement what a great all-rounder.
Then we come to the most impressive bit of all, the gameplay. This isn’t just a sandbox to play with, far from it. What we have with Little Big Planet is the entire beach and you’re in complete control of what you want to do with it, but we’ll get to that later. For those who are not as creative there is a very good single player mode which allows you to play all the levels made in-house as a story, although there really isn’t much of a tale to be telling. You are Sackboy and your task is to go around all these stages collecting tools and other paraphernalia to use when you come to create your own projects. It’s at this point I must stress to everyone to fully play the tutorial, as doing so unlocks so many of the useful items and helps the player to have more instruments of creation at his or her fingertips.
