DD #11.5 - April Fool's and the Real Entry

Posted by DEVWolfire, Dec 31, 1969 18:00

Wolfire's Developer Diary entry was a joke. We are not in fact making a more 'marketable' game and the development of Overgrowth is continuing full steam ahead...

In my recent entries I've been bragging about the powerful yet intuitive Overgrowth map editing tools.  While our artist Aubrey is already very accustomed to our map editor, if we really want to encourage modding, we need to make sure our setup is intuitive for fans as well.  I've mentioned how we've been carefully listening to fan feedback as we add tools but now we finally have some serious proof of what our editor is capable of.  You are about to see a video fly-through of a map created entirely by Hale, one of our fans.  He named the map Foothold.  Feel free to watch the video in HD here.

We were completely blown away by the detail and complexity of Hale's creation. He designed the city to be under siege so you'll see crumbled walls and roofs that have been hit by large stones. The attackers have a scaled-down a map of the city on a table back at their command post. The city includes houses and an amphitheater and many other subtle details that I didn't think were even possible to create. We feel that Hale's success achievement indicates that our map editor tools are essentially complete and we can now safely shift our focus to other areas of development (finishing shadows, building the animation editor, prototyping the fighting system, etc.) We still have a lot of work to do, but this still feels like a major milestone for us.
