Mobile phone Drama?

Postby SuperGuido on Tue Feb 03, 2009 8:20 am

I found this today while doing some other stuff. I thought it might be interesting to some of you.

Thmbnls (thumbnails), the world’s first interactive drama created exclusively for mobile phones, launched in the UK at 7pm on Friday 9th January 2009.

Focusing on the lives of a group of six teens, each episode of the cutting-edge weekly series asks the over-16 audience to not only form their opinions but to share them with the cast and other viewers. What’s more, the feedback can even influence the Thmbnls story lines.
In each of the 22 episodes of Thmbnls, whether it’s good-time girl Jakki pulling at a party or best mates Billy and Gripper blagging their way into a gig, viewers have the chance to interact with the characters to give their own outlook via text, email or phonecall, leading to a cliff-hanger at the end of each episode.

To make sure the series is 100% realistic, young people not only star in the brand new drama, they are also involved in script-development. Plus it is fully interactive – for teenagers Thmbnls will feel like having six new friends on their phone; texting, emailing and sharing every problem and success; personalised references to individual viewers will feature as the series develops.
In fact, the cast shares personalised videos and music tracks with the audience too.

Seventeen year-old Alex Matten who plays the character of Billy, says: “I can’t give much away, but we don’t take any prisoners with what we cover. We’ve gone for the kind of stuff we’re all facing all the time and viewers get the chance to make up their own minds about it. I can’t wait to see people’s reactions to Thmbnls and how they interact with us.”
Peter Riley, Creative Director of 20:20 London, the driving force behind the idea, says: “Thmbnls is cutting-edge, realistic and relevant to young people. Viewers can personally interact with the characters and the issues they’re facing in a way that’s not been achieved before now. This is taking mobile broadcast to a whole new level.”

By signing-up at www.thmbnls.co.uk or by texting DRAMA to 62233 (standard rates apply) young people get every episode sent straight to their mobile phone for free and will be able to get involved with all the characters throughout the New Year. Interact with Thmbnls online, and via email, text and voice-call.

This can be a really good idea. Imagine the possibilities that can happen when multiple strangers interact with each other.

But without any planning, it can also produce a really bad plot.
