DICE, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio announced that Battlefield 1943 will be available in June for $15 USD in the Xbox LIVE  Marketplace (1200 MS Points) or the PlayStation Store. The action-packed arcade title will also be available for PC in September. Battlefield 1943 is an all-new multiplayer game that offers endless hours of 24-player action in popular maps inspired by Battlefield 1942, now updated with the Frostbite engine. The total destructibility afforded by the Frostbite engine ups the ante and leaves players with nowhere to hide.

In Battlefield 1943, intense battles ensue over three classic and tropic locations; Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Gamers play as the US Marines or the Imperial Japanese Navy, competing by land, air and sea. Players have the freedom to pick their path in battle - be it as a rifleman crawling through the trenches, a steel fisted tank commander, or a dog fighting pilot that protects the skies.

“Using the same Frostbite engine that we developed for Battlefield: Bad Company, we are able to take players back to WWII and return to the roots of the Battlefield franchise, but with a new twist – destruction,” said Gordon Van Dyke, Producer on Battlefield 1943. “We want to offer gamers the most accessible online shooter experience and the best value found in any premium download title with Battlefield 1943.”

I seem to recall the last game EA offered on Xbox Live has a notice that they can take the servers down almost at any time. Something like 30 days notice. I’m kind of hesitant to try any of their XBLA games in light of things like that, especially since I wonder: "Why in the world do we even need EA to provide servers? End-users providing temporary servers seems to work for most games, even FPS games on the 360 such as Team Fortress 2."

Consider me very, very cautious about BF1943. I don’t like the idea that the publisher can yank the game out from under you like that, and I’d have to hear that players can provide their own servers before I’d even consider buying it given EA’s history on this.

Well that’s so when it’s 2015 and no one is playing the game but a select few they can repurpose that stuff. I think just this year they announced that they’ll be removing servers for something like the 2006 or 2007 sports titles....that’s 3-4 years which isn’t so bad I guess.

I have no problem with that. They need not provide servers well into 2015 or whatever. What I’m saying is their servers are unnecessary... it seems that we can get by with providing our own servers. It’s not perfect, but it’s certainly not bad either in the cases I’ve seen. We should be able to provide our own servers, so that if we want to play game X into 2015 or beyond, we can. I see no reason to be reliant on EA.
