We just got information from NCSoft in regards to the long queues that many people have been seeing at the outset of the game’s launch.
"Due to the tremendous excitement surrounding the Western launch of Aion and the phenomenal demand from MMO players who want to quickly jump into the game, we have proactively increased our server capacity by almost 50% since launch. The addition of new servers and increase in maximum user capacity per server equips us to better handle player demand. For players who are experiencing longer than normal queue times, there are several servers available in which to choose from with minimal queue times: North America—Fregion European Union—Nerthus, Deltras, Kahrun Choosing to play on one of these less populated servers allows players to quickly jump into the game, bypassing the longer queue times of servers in high demand. We will continue to monitor queues closely. We strive to provide players with the best possible experience with Aion, and we will be adding additional servers as necessary."
Now going to a less popular server will certainly get you into the game and playing even if it’s not with all of your friends or with as many people as you would like to. Hopefully, NCSoft will at a later time allow some sort of server switch for characters. That way when the phenomenal demand for the game lessens, as they are predicting it will (and historically has been seen to happen) you’ll be able to transfer to a more populated.
There has been no word from NCSoft on server switching but other games have implemented it later and some make you pay a small fee and have time limits to prevent you from doing it repeatedly. Perhaps this might be an option for Aion as well.
