IGN Opens Social Gaming Platform, War Heats up

IGN, subsidiary of the monster News Corp. have announced the launch of  MyIGN, a social gaming portal. While Facebook has been hoping to become the main place for social gaming, and everyone scrambles to enter the market or maintain market share as Google heads toward it, IGN decided it was time to launch.

June saw nearly 103 million visitors heading to online gaming portals.  WildTangent Network took the top spot with 17.3 million visitors, a 6% increase for them. GSN Games Network And CPMStar came next with 16.9 million, followed by Nickelodeon Casual games with 15.3 million (up 14 percent), EA Online with 15.1 million (up 2 percent), and Disney Games with 14.9 million (up 15 percent).

Google has recently invested heavily in social game maker Zynga, makers of the madly popular Farmville, and are working on their own platform. It’s said they’re also trying to hook up with EA, Playfish (now owned by EA) and Playdom, though Playdom recently was purchased by Disney.

MyIGN aspires to gives readers an "identity" that allows them to see what their friends are doing across different gaming platforms and connects them with the games, other community members, and IGN editors. Presently, IGN covers some 60,000 games, which in theory gives them ample ability to cater to the tastes of individual gamers.

The site is sponsored by AT&T so you can rest assured that you’ll be bombarded by their Death Star-like logo and ads for new mobile phones and service.

Let the social-gaming-platform wars begin!

Who do you think will survive, not make the grade or dominate?
