After launching in September 2007, millions of fans the world over still log onto Xbox LIVE every day to experience the award-winning action of “Halo 3” multiplayer. That experience expanded first in December with the release of the Heroic Map Pack, and today Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie release the next evolution with the Legendary Map Pack.

Available for 800 Microsoft Points exclusively on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, this second major downloadable content offering includes three new multiplayer maps, as well as a load of new Forge options.

Avalanche and Blackout revive two fan-favourite maps from previous “Halo” games, while Ghost Town welcomes desolate jungle combat to the experience. And now, using new options in the Forge, players can create more detailed challenges and map variants than ever, while also utilising a variety of visual effects to create new, unique screenshots and saved films.

Avalanche is a throwback all the way to “Halo: Combat Evolved.” This snowy battlefield was inspired by the original Sidewinder, but the massive, vehicle-oriented objective map adds a twist to its classic predecessor with all new interiors, dramatically reshaped exteriors and brand new vehicle variants. Admire the view from above, as Avalanche also marks the arrival of the Hornet to “Halo 3” multiplayer.

In keeping with the theme of “fan-favourites,” Blackout will fill the void left by fans of “Halo 2’s” Lockout. Although fully re-visualised, this map adheres very faithfully to the tightly wound perfection of the original, but eschews Forerunner architecture in favour of industrial human design. Blackout is perfect for fans of small battleground Slayer matches.

The Legendary Map Pack also packs a brand new punch, in addition to the two classics, with Ghost Town – a battle-scarred maze of narrow passages and dangerous ruins. Collapsed ceilings and shell-battered buildings provide both valuable cover and deadly traps, as catwalks and stairways take the fight from claustrophobic ground combat to dizzying rooftop battles. Ghost Town is a mid-sized map ideal for Team Slayer games and smaller, objective types.

As an added bonus, for a limited time only, gamers who purchase the Legendary Map Pack will receive a four month subscription to "Bungie PRO" via Xbox LIVE. Bungie PRO greatly expands the Halo 3 experience by increasing the maximum number of file share storage slots from six to twenty-four while also increasing the total file storage size to 250MB. This will allow players to upload and share more films, maps, screenshots and game-types than ever before.

The maps of the Legendary Map Pack are available in matchmaking today to those who have purchased the download. Additionally, fans that have yet to purchase the Heroic Map Pack, which released in December, can now download it for free on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Blackout - The remake of Lockout.
"I wish I had more hands so I could give this map four thumbs down!"
Why, why, why??? Who at Bungie let the turd who remade this map do such a ****ty job? They took one of the best maps in Halo history and said, "Hmmm, how can we **** this up?" Well, they found a way and we all paid to see the end result. Blackout plays basically the same as Lockout (Duh) with some minor differences. There are some subtle tweaks to the new map layout and they aren’t all for the best.
1. The top of BR tower is too large. In fact, this new BR tower size carries through from top to bottom.
2. You can no longer snipe straight through from Snipe 1 to BR 1. However, Bungie saw fit to make it even easier for someone to camp that area with the new placement of the exit door from the Suicide Room to Shotgun 2.
3. They closed up the window in the Library (I guess now you can call it the Locker/Gym area as it actually has a Basketball Goal and Lockers in there). This used to be the perfect spot from which to snipe. You could cover the top of the Lift Tower, Shotgun 2 and BR 1 areas from this spot...not any longer. I also used to get many sticks from this spot. DAMN YOU BUNGIE!!!!
4. Shotgun 1 got a new facelift. I think they had the right intent but the end result is flawed. You can now jump up from Shotgun 1 to ramp leading to Shotgun 2 without having to use the ramps on either side.
5. Lift Room looks nice but to me the lift seems a bit slower than I remember it being on Lockout. "Mr. Scott...we need more power!" "Damn it Jim...I’m givin er all she’s got!"
Overall I was disappointed with the highly anticipated Lockout Remake. It should be refered to as the Lockout Let Down.

Ghost Town - New Map. Conceptualized from the Campaign.
WOW! By far the best of the three new maps. I only played a few games on it yesterday but I think I have just found my new favorite map. I heard a lot of grumbling and complaining about this map yesterday but I think it KICKS ASS!! Most of it was related to getting "caught up on ****". I say hit the jump button moreoften and this won’t happen. It plays well for any gametype and, if you have the right squad of four they can own on this map. I give Bungie props for this map and maybe, just maybe they should have went this way for all the maps instead of remaking a Halo 1 or 2 map which both are seemingly dire disappointments. (More on Avalanche later)

Avalanche - Remake of Halo 1 Map Sidewinder
I never played Halo 1, so I can’t honestly compare the remake to the original but I can say this. Bungie, why the hell is this map in the DLC Slayer playlist? 4 v 4 on this map...are you ****ing kidding me? This map is so friggin huge you would need a 30 minute time limit to reach 50 kills. (And that’s pushing it.) As for Big Team games, this map is great. Could it be better? Hell yes! Put some more vehicles on the friggin map you assholes!! Another Mongoose or 2 or 3 on each side would work. Oh, and where the hell is the Scorpion Tank? You saw it on the ViDoc but it isn’t in the game. Why? If you can put 2 piece of **** Wraiths in there you can throw in a tank or 2 as well. As for weapons, I think the number and placement is perfect. What isn’t so perfect is the respawn time for the sniper rifles. (Way to quick to respawn Bungie.) I’m sure those who like to camp with this weapon don’t feel the same way I do but for those of us who are getting raped by the camping Sniper *****s it really sucks. As for the Hornets...I say get rid of one and place the remaining one at the bend adjacent to Ghost/Laser spawn and may the best (quickest) team get to it first. (More strategy)
Overall I would give this map a 6. This is based purely on the fact that they didn’t give us the Scorpion and on the weapon respawn times.
My Map Ratings:
Blackout - 5
Ghost Town - 10+
Avalanche - 6
