Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console is on target to beat the 24 million units sold worldwide by its predecessor, the Xbox, by the end of this month.

Mindy Mount, CFO of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, told an audience at the MBO Capital Markets Interactive Entertainment Conference: "By the end of this month, we expect our global installed base to reach 25 million units, surpassing that of the first Xbox.”

Mount claimed that its current success is "only a start", adding that history shows that most consoles experience three quarters of their lifetime sales once they drop to below $199, a price reached by the Xbox 360 in September.
