Roccat Kone+ Mouse Review (Hardware)

Posted by Jeff Lindsey (Piso_mojado), Jan 12, 2012 07:56

German manufacturer have held some the highest standards in the world.  People of the world hold several famous products from German in high regard.  From shoes to kitchen knives, clocks to delicious food, and of course the many well not automobile companies, Germany has left its mark on the world.  So when I heard that Roccat, a Germany based manufacturer of gaming products, was making plans to start exporting to the US of A, I was thrilled.  Even though I had never heard of Roccat, I had high hopes.  After a week of testing, I am pleased to say that Roccat lives up to the high standards that we have come to expect from Germany.

  Out of the Box

When the Roccat Kone+ showed up, I didn’t know what to expect.  Roccat is a company that is just beginning to export to the United States.  I now know that they have a huge fan base in Europe, but apart from being told, “We’re sending you a mouse from Roccat,” I had never heard of them.  Being new in town means you have to get to know people and the same thing goes for companies that make gaming hardware.  I think that Roccat will be an everyday name in the US gaming community by the end of 2012.

Inside the box you will find the mouse, weight tray, and user guide.  The first thing that will catch your eye is the logo.  Roccat’s logo can be mistaken for the Thundercats or ibuypower logo at first glance, but giving it a second look you can see the features gaming mouse roccat kone+that make it unique.  The fierce looking cat is placed on the palm grip of the mouse and its grey color really makes it stand out and draws your attention.  On the top of the mouse to the left and the right are plastic tracks that light up.  These hold 4 individually programmable LEDs.  With the Roccat drivers, your possible combinations of colors is immense.  There are no lights to indicate your DPI settings, but Roccat has a totally unique solution for this.  (which I will tell you more about in the Testing section of the review)

On the bottom of the mouse you will find the round cap to the weight tray.  Just a small turn and you have access to add 4 separate 5 gram weights.  You will also see the professional grade 6000 DPI sensor.  Above this is the 7 foot cable which is not braided, but is a large gauge, sturdy wire.

Back on top you will five additional programmable buttons; seven if you count the sidescroll on the wheel.  This includes two thumb buttons, two buttons just behind the scroll wheel and one in front of it.  The Kone+ also has a nifty little feature called Easy-Shift that effectively doubles the amount of buttons on the mouse, but more on that in the Testing section of this review.

Our Rating for Roccat Kone+ Mouse Review (Hardware)
8.0 Design
A great feel and shape, but perhaps not for everyone. The thick portion of at the left and right click buttons pushes you towards a palm grip style.
10.0 Functionality
The Kone+ does everything that a mouse should and with the Easy-Shift technology, effectively doubles the functions you have.
8.5 Value
You can find cheaper mice with similar features, but there are enough unique features to make the mouse worth its asking price.
8.0 Usability
Comfortable for palm grippers, but not as much for those with fingertip or claw grip styles.
9.0 Customer Service
I realize that Roccat’s headquarters are in a different time zone, but a response time of less than an hour is phenomenal.
9.0 Overall
Roccat’s American debut is nothing short of awe inspiring. With amazing products like the Kone+, you can expect to start hearing their name more frequently.
