Splitscreen Studios made a couple announcements lately about some games they’re working on. Here’s a quick rundown of their free-to-play browser games:
Pirate Galaxy - Already live and ready for you to check out. Pirate Galaxy is the award winning science fiction MMO about the resistance of mankind against an alien species called “Mantis”. It’s free to play and provides real time 3D graphics directly in your browser. Enjoy fast-paced, tactical spaceship combats, become part of a spectacular storyline and invite your friends on exciting missions against the unite enemy.
Steel Legions - An action MMO where you exist as a tank driver fighting for your faction. The game is currently in
closed beta (and does have some fun bits I’ve played already). In an alternate past, steel, steam, and oil have become essential resources for the military forces of the age: gigantic steel colossi weighing several tons, steered by half a dozen men and women. These machines maintain the balance of power between the four largest empires. But machines require fuel – which is a scarce commodity. (Closed beta key giveaway details end of page2.)
Dino Storm - When this game announcement came in, I decided that since I was headed to Hamburg, I had to meet these guys. Inspired by an 80’s
cartoon, Dino Riders, which involved a battle between Valorians and evil Rulons on prehistoric Earth. While only 14 episodes were made (as it was aimed at selling toys really), the series has a small following. As members of the Rangers, Dino Storm players hunt down the fiendish scoundrels who are wreaking havoc in the western town of DinoVille. Theft, arson, and robbery have become daily occurrences in this idyllic little settlement surrounded by desert. But instead of horses or donkeys, our modern-day bounty hunters use trained dinosaurs as their mounts – including the gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex, the largest land-dwelling carnivore amongst primordial lizards.
The team currently consists of 14 people mostly doing concept art, game design and the core coding. Other art
assets and work is outsourced to some other firms and Splitscreen pieces it all together to make their final products.
Mark Buchholz, the CTO at Splitscreen Studios, gave up some of his time to run me through the games and give me the low down on how they came about, how they are designing the games and how they look at gaming in general.
