Michelle Liberman from SomaTone contacted us and did a lot of legwork to get GDN and Kane Minkus one of the partners over at Somatone together for this Q&A. GDN wants to extend our thanks to all parties involved.
[GDN] How many team members at SomaTone were involved in preparing the music for Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst?
[KM] In some ways almost the whole staff was involved as they all loved the score and game and wanted to be contributing to it any way they could. But there were about 10 core members involved, between the writing, arranging, production, sound designing and mixing. The process we used this time to create the music and the sound design was quite different than how we had approached other soundtracks. There were many breakthroughs for us on how to continue to push the envelope of audio for this game. We pushed the technical limits of our gear and creative approaches to come up with completely unique sounding elements.
[GDN] How did the Berlin Film Orchestra get involved in the Return to Ravenhurst project?
[KM] We work with the Orchestra quite a bit for Film work we do, especially in Europe, and they were more then happy to work with us on this. In fact many of the players commented on how fun the music was to play. Game music can often be more expressive then film music with more emotional peaks and valleys. The players were very serious and focused, and any time one would crack a smile the conductor would comment on how much fun they must be having – this was unusual for them!
